General Information About MapPoint 2002
What does MapPoint offer that the Data Map feature in Excel does not?
MapPoint gives you the flexibility to map data down to the street level in the United States and Canada and the ability to easily draw on the map.

In addition, MapPoint ships with business-related demographic data already installed. Companies of any size can use this information in conjunction with their own data to analyze business and demographic information on a map. This enables them to identify sales trends, track customer activity, and monitor other geographic aspects of their business.

How is MapPoint different from Microsoft Streets & Trips?
These two products are intended for different types of users. Microsoft Streets & Trips provides general consumers with comprehensive maps and directions, as well as trip-planning services. MapPoint contains analysis capabilities that enable business users to plot database information and analyze business and demographic information on a map. While both programs enable users to pinpoint locations on a map, MapPoint has been designed as a productivity companion to Office.

What kind of demographic data is included with MapPoint, and how can I obtain updates?
MapPoint ships with business-related demographic data provided by Claritas, Inc., (for the United States) and CompuSearch (for Canada). MapPoint 2002 demographic data includes populations, household sizes, household income, median population age, and population by age. It's broken down according to country, state, county, metropolitan area, ZIP Code, and census tract region.

From the Help tool in MapPoint, you can also link to Claritas, CompuSearch, and other affiliates for supplemental demographic variables and updates. You can acquire, import, and map these additional demographics for use in MapPoint.

MapPoint also enables users to import or link their own data from a wide variety of tabular data sources, including some versions of Access, Excel, Outlook contacts, delimited text, and most OLE databases and Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) data sources.

How does MapPoint support accessibility needs?
MapPoint provides the following support:

                        Map magnification

                        Large font sizes

                        Keyboard shortcuts

Can MapPoint be customized by developers?
Yes. Developers can customize MapPoint from COM-enabled development systems such as Microsoft Visual Basic, Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications, and Microsoft Visual C++. MapPoint 2002 contains an object model that enables automation for creating new maps, finding places and addresses, importing and linking data, creating data maps, creating routes, printing, panning, and zooming. New in MapPoint 2002 is an ActiveX control that enables developers to modify a portion of the functionality and place it in a customized user interface for company-specific Visual Basic 6.0 applications.

Can I publish MapPoint maps even though they have the Microsoft copyright?
Yes, as long as you keep the copyright information with the map and the map is not for sale. Copyright law prohibits you from copying a map for commercial publication, as in a newspaper or magazine. Refer to the license agreement that comes with MapPoint 2002 for more information on how you may use the software.
